Burning Man, a city wherein almost everything that happens is created entirely by its citizens, who are active participants in the experience. Dubbed the craziest party in the world, this isn’t your usual festival and this year's event is just around the corner.

what is it Actually?

The Burning Man event began as a bonfire ritual by Larry Harvey and his group of friends in 1986, on the summer solstice on Baker Beach in San Francisco. Since then, the gathering has been organized by the Burning Man Project and has become an annual event which sees tens of thousands of people gather for at least a week.

Participants join in the effort to co-create Black Rock City, a temporary city block dedicated to art and community. The festival is rounded off with the burning of a giant wooden effigy. The Burning Man festival is named after the giant effigy which is set alight at the end of the gathering.

Last year’s festival saw over 70,000 "burners" including 3,000 rich enough to jet in to its unregulated Black Rock City Airport join the rebellious souls at Burning Man.

Burning Man is a gifting society and you are expected to bring everything you will need to survive the festival week in the desert, which include as much water as you can carry, and all your food for a week plus some stuffs to give away.

What you need to know

Burning Man Festival 2017 takes place August 27 – September 4, 2017 in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.

Here are some Burning Man Slangs to get you started

A burner – someone who attends Burning Man.

The playa – where the art is.

The deep playa – remote areas from the camp where random art installations wait to be discovered.

Moop (Mess out of place) – Litter

Playa dust - Not sand or dust (Alkaline residue of an old lake bed)

General Tips

- No commerce, so in general if a camp has a bar the drinks are free. You might have to pay in hugs, or jokes, or a secret about yourself. Nothing serious, and always fun.

- If you run a bar, or take a turn serving drinks at a friend's bar, or have an extra beer that someone asks if they can have: ASK FOR ID

- If you are going to mount a bike behind your car, make sure it doesn’t obstruct the license plate

- Nowhere on earth will you get as positive a response to a simple smile and hello as you will at Burning Man. Lots of times you'll just be walking by a small camp of people sitting around and they'll invite you in for a drink.

- I’ve read cases of undercover cops, so if you go to the rock with half your senses then you’re cool.

- Be self-sufficient and open to the places and people but still maintain a critical awareness, street smart is crucial.

Black Rock City is an amazing place filled with such an array of human life that is both appalling and inexplicably beautiful at the same time. This place called home is exactly what you make of it so get there safely so you can make your experience meaningful and let it plant a seed that will stay with you and grow for the rest of your life. If this will be your first year there is no way of properly explaining the breathtaking world you are diving headfirst into.
